I have to admit something. I’ve actually been leaving music and TV shows on for my dog since I got him as a puppy 10 years ago. I always feel terrible leaving him at home when I go out, and so I figured this was a way to help him feel a little less lonely. Usually, for TV it’s some kind of old-time show (he loves that stuff) and for music I’d just throw on a random playlist that Spotify suggested.
In this article, we’ll revisit classic music videos that feature thought-provoking concepts and communicate the message of their song perfectly, in ways that we can borrow ourselves as DIY musicians.

“Mia”: Huh… so the new Top 5-ers these last few weeks have had tempos of 96, 98, and now 97 BPM. Is this divine synchronicity or just dumb chance? You decide. And we’ve got a couple of slight variations here: the occasional♭VII chord showing up in the loop, different verse lengths. There may be more variations as far as lyrics are concerned, but alas, I don’t speak Spanish.
Gorgeous though the chaconne is, my enjoyment has been hampered by my inability to figure out the rhythm. All classical performers insist on doing extremely expressive (read: loose) timekeeping. I don’t have the sarabande rhythm internalized well enough to be able to track it through everybody’s gooey rubato. Bach’s rhythms are complicated enough to begin with. He loves to start and end phrases in weird spots in the bar (the very first note of the piece is on beat two) — so, I needed some help finding the beat.
Well, depending on how comfortable you are, inviting guests into your closet where you may or may not have clothes could be a difficult task. Try to find a spot that is softly furnished and quiet. Bars, for example, are not ideal for interviews. You’ll also ideally need a second microphone if the premise of your podcast is interviews. This complicates things slightly and you may have to delve a little deeper into your pockets. Be aware of your acoustic surroundings; it will save you time and money in the long run.
In addition to plugins like the above, there are many software instruments and patch libraries that will provide you with ready-made approximations of that coveted Boards of Canada sound. These will no doubt be valuable to some, but I’m a believer in DIY production: You get way more financial and personal value from learning the process yourself rather than using a tool where it’s hidden away from you under the hood.
Okay all this is super cool, but the thing is that Björk says, “first and foremost, Biophilia, is an album”. No matter how we view the creation and dissemination of the album and its concepts, it is true that Biophilia, like Magna Carta Holy Grail, is fundamentally available as a mass-produced musical product. The ingenuity and approach that went into these albums may end up influencing as many people as, say, Sgt. Peppers or Metal Machine Music, or Graceland, but they are all in the same family.

To add more character to your drums, try panning each piece in your kit in a thoughtful way. This will help keep sounds from getting muddled and will be great for later when you need to differentiate instruments like the kick and bass. This also gives you the opportunity to spice up you drum part with a bit of unpredictability. For example, if your kit includes claps, each hit could switch from falling on the left or right side.
I’m not here to tell you to “fake it ‘til you make it.” The person that coined that divine piece of wisdom has probably never experienced the daunting 10 seconds before walking out onto a stage and singing in front of hundreds of people. I am, however, here to tell you that getting a grip on anxieties and insecurities around your vocal performance is perfectly possible.

It’s been a crazy journey, and the indie touring scene can be both amazing and awful. Stressing out about your next meal, tank of gas, or whether you’re gonna get kicked out of that Walmart parking lot is not always fun. But we’ve had some good times too, so here are a few ways to have more fun on tour (even if your livelihood doesn’t depend on it!).
